How Do You Get a Loan to Buy a Franchise?

· David Sheets

You picked the brand, you've talked to the franchisor, and now you need to pay for it. I get this call a lot.

A franchise is easier for a lender to understand than a brand-new idea, because there's a system and other locations already open. But the lender's still lending to you, not the logo.

So they'll look at your own background, especially time spent running people or a business. They'll want to know how much of your own cash is going in and where it came from. They'll read the franchise disclosure document, which is the packet the franchisor has to give you before you sign. And they'll look at the site and the cost to open.

Get that together before you apply. It makes the first call a lot shorter.
